Vizag RPO issues 1.86 lakh passports despite Hudhud hurdle

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Vizag regional passport office (RPO) has made it to the list of five RPOs in the country to have crossed their targets set by the Union ministry of external affairs under its ‘Mission One Crore Passports’. The other four RPOs are Kochi, Madurai, Chandigarh and Surat.

The Vizag RPO made the cut by achieving its target of issuing 1,86,079 despite the disruptions caused by Cyclone Hudhud. The ministry had launched the mission in order to compete with China and the US, which currently issue over one crore passports per year.

According to NLP Choudary, regional passport officer, the Union ministry had set a target of issuing one crore passports in the country through all the 37 RPOs, including Vizag, by December 31, 2014. “The Vizag RPO was given a target of issuing 1,86,079 passports, which we have already achieved,” Choudary said.
